I’m a 30+ year old married guy from the UK. Here’s my story.
2012 was the year I began something new: I started podcasting. 2013 kicked off by setting up a web server and self-hosting the first episode on January 5th. It was a modest production with a few friends, and we enjoyed it enough to keep going for 127 weekly episodes.
We also ran gaming LAN events, got invited to conventions, and over time we actually got pretty good at it. In that time I bought A LOT of audio equipment, and once we were done with that project I wondered what I should do next. I already had some really nice mics, and towards the end we became a video podcast that broadcast on Twitch & YouTube, so I knew my way around OBS and live streaming. I thought it would be a shame to leave the equipment unused.
I was burnt out producing regular structured content, and thought the idea of broadcasting myself playing games was a pretty good way to relax & get more use out of the gear. In 2015, I began streaming solo on Twitch.
Since then, I’ve gone from a single PC setup to a dual PC setup, upgraded the camera, the resolution, the bitrate, the overlays, installed a ceiling mounted green screen, bought new lighting, and invested in pretty much everything I possibly can. It has become an exciting creative sandbox if you are looking for the positives, and an absolute money-pit if you choose to find the negatives. I’m happy with it though; I have very few vices. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, & I needed something FUN to spend my money on. I believe that life is for living and it’s important to pursue the things you enjoy, whatever form that takes.
In contrast, it has been very challenging. I really like that aspect of it; it drives me to continue to evolve & learn. There’s a technical underbelly to streaming that I find fascinating, and solving my own problems & seeking out better techniques led to personal growth, greater knowledge, and a better quality stream. I love solving puzzles, and running a channel has given me countless hours of enjoyment, and even more hours of frustration and soul searching. I have spent many nights sitting in front of my PC scratching my head and wondering if any of this is worth it. But I can tell you with certainty: 100% YES.
2021 I try something new. It’s called Glimesh. Hmm?
